Few would deny that Google is the most useful website on the internet. Many would agree that it is also one of the most fun destinations on the web.

There are more ways to kill time with Google than you can click a mouse at. Below is a starter list of them. Click EasyEdit to add new ones to the list.

Google Bombing

A so-called Google Bomb is a means to influence the ranking of a web page in Google search returns to create an amusing result (some people also create ego bombs and justice bombs, to propel their websites up the ranks or mete out web justice, respectively). Bombs are created by "gaming" Google's PageRank algorithm; this effect is achieved by a large number of sites linking to a target page by using consistent anchor text. Google Talk

Google Talk answers the question what Google would say if it could talk? Enter a short text string and Google will complete the thought.

Swedish Chef Google

Type "bork bork bork" into Google and the first result is Google translated into "Swedish Chef" language. Not only is the homepage in Swedish Chef, but so are all the sub pages, such as Advanced Search.

Visual Poetry

Visual Poetry uses Google image search to translate text strings into a slideshow of relevant results. (Try: "Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple.")

World Color

Word Color uses Google image search to determine the color of a word or string of words. The app snags the top nine image results and loops through all pixels, calculating the average hue, which is later converted to a color.

Google as historian

Google Date lets you enter a date and then returns "this day in history" results. Random returns. Google History can help you find out in what year something happened.

Google Best Time to Visit helps you time a visit anywhere in the world.

Google Calendar solves many problems at once. Recognizing that calendars are more than just private scheduling devices for work or home, Google has created a flexible, sharable online calendar with scads of options to keep you and your crew (family, co-workers, teammates, etc.) all on the same page.

Integrated with Gmail, the calendar functionality will recognize events in your email and prompt you to add them to your schedule. You can import events from other applications like Yahoo! Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and Apple’s iCal, and then share those events with the people you invite to see your agenda.

You can also send invitations, get RSVPs, and have visitors post comments to upcoming events. Google will even remind you when your next game, next meeting, or next birthday is around the corner.

Keyboard shortcuts

If you want to feel like a pro on any application, the first step is nailing the keyboard shortcuts—so you don’t just feel like a pro, you look like one, too. Here are a few shortcuts for Google Calendar:

Multiple Calendars

You can make multiple calendars (for example you might want separate calendars for "work", "personal", "birthdays", and "Evil Plans for Global Domination") which you can then use check boxes to show or hide them on your calendar display. Two important things to note, however, are that the first calendar you create will be your "Primary" calendar. At this time, there is no way to change which calendar is your "Primary" calendar, and you can only set reminders on the "Primary" calendar.

If you create an item on your "Primary" calendar, the reminder options will be there. "So", you might think to yourself, "I'll just set the reminder, and then switch which calendar it's on!" I'm afraid your wily ways will not fool Google. When you save the event, the reminder will go away. If you re-open that event you will now see that "Reminder" does not show under the event options.

Customized view

Google, like any calendar program, offers day, week, and month views of your schedule. But since Google always must have the next best thing, they’ve introduced Customized View, which you can set as Next 4 Days to Next 4 Weeks to anything else – and the X shortcut will get you there immediately.

Reminders as text messages

One of Google Calendar’s greatest features is its interface with your mobile phone. Go into Settings > Notifications to verify your cell number, and Google will send you a text message alerting you to your next appointment.

Mobile agenda

Once Google has validated your phone number and linked it to your Google account, you can text message DAY to 48368, and Google Calendar will text you back your full day’s agenda with name, time, and location information.

Mac users

Google Calendar is about 50% compliant with Mac. For instance, Calendar will work fine on IE or Firefox on a Mac, but forget about it with Safari. Also, exchanging information between Google Calendar and Mac’s iCal works okay—you can broadcast and receive calendars from both apps to both apps. However, these transferred calendars are read-only, so they don’t perfectly sync. You can pull information from one to the other, but they don’t talk back and forth freely.

So, when you "Google" your name, you want your website to be the top listing, right? How can you optimize your site so Google sees it better? Following are some best practices to adopt. Click the EasyEdit button to add tips and tricks that have worked for you.

A quick list of DOs and DON’Ts:
DO:

Use words on your web page(s) that would be likely search terms someone might type into Google to find your site.

Ask friends or other webmasters to link to your site. Google determines a site’s value by the number of other sites that link to it.

DON’T:

Hide keywords in your website using the same color for text and background so viewers can’t see the words but search engine spiders can. Google’s spiders can identify this sort of unethical behavior and ban you from Google. That’s right—ban you—from Google. Then where will you be? The world is a cold place when you’re banished from Google.

Put important words, names, or information only in graphics, images, or Flash- or Java-based applets. Google can’t see the words if they aren’t text.

Tools of the Trade

There are a few ways to help Google pull your information, but now Google offers a variety of ways to help you push your information into Google’s giant database of information.

Google Base

The Google Base will put information online and searchable. It’s a new way to share information, even if you don’t know how to reach your audience. Just type it into a form and boom!, it’s on Google. Google Base is a new opportunity to put content online—you don’t even need to maintain a web page that sources the information.

Google Sitemaps

The Google Sitemaps service allows you to submit your URLs to the Google index and get detailed reports about the visibility of your pages on Google. You can automatically keep Google informed of all your web pages and update Google when you make changes. You get better crawl coverage and fresher search results to help people find more of your web pages, as well as detailed reports to learn more about how Google directs traffic to your site and how the Googlebot sees your pages.

Beyond these tools, Google offers other free services to help you optimize your web traffic:

AdSense

Google’s ad placement service, Google AdSense, will send you a check or electronic payment whenever you accumulate $100 from the ads placed on your site(s), which could take a while based on per-click rates. AdSense posts ads based on the content of your pages. If you have a site devoted to antique toasters, AdSense might place ads by online bakers or oven manufacturers.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics gives you free for what other web hosting services charge a premium fee. Who goes to your site, and how often? How many viewers go to how many pages? What’s the average length of time per visit? Google Analytics answers these questions and more for free.

Several search engines offer image search these days, but Google Image Search claims to be the biggest, with billions of images indexed and ready to search. Ther best website around is www.spaceweb.wetpaint.com

Video search

Sites like Youtube.com and alltheweb.com have free video search, but Google got snagged by the copyright net. Being the biggest kid on the block has made Google more vulnerable to copyright lawsuits, so even though Google offers the biggest video index on the web, do you want to pay for that episode of CSI? Like Google Book, Google Video will give you a taste, but then you have to pay.

Adult image search

Image results not dirty enough? Turn off the mature content filter feature and make sure no one else is looking. Don’t do this at work!

Random image generator

Google Random Image is a nifty little javascript feature that scans the html of the page it is on and then finds matching images on Google Image Search to display. This way you can always have a fresh image on your site/blog. If you’re blogging about butterflies, for instance, this little application will display a fresh butterfly image every 60 seconds. Montage-a-Google

Someone has built an applet that will search Google Images and return results in a Flash-based screen filled with your image search requests as a montage. Want a page filled with puppies? Or a wall of George W. Bushes? Visit the site and start montaging!

So, the NSA taps your phones but doesn’t bother to let you know what it knows. Google, with billions of bits of search data at its fingertips, is a little more forthcoming.

With Google Zeitgeist, Google shows you what’s hot in the world of search engine searches, revealing sometimes surprising cultural patterns and trends. Google won’t tell you what the most searched terms are, exactly, but Zeitgeist will show you the terms that gained the most ground that week. Plus, Zeitgeist breaks down popular search terms into a few different categories for comparison’s sake, which also removes the data another step from its raw form. Google’s minions also filter out sexual search terms from Zeitgeist, so there will be no record of the great “blow job” search pandemic of March 2003.

Google Trends

Google Trends, a cousin to Zeitgeist,shows you the trajectory of one search term over time. See the volume of any search term over the last three years. What terms are hot? Which are sinking? Who is more popular this year than in 2004? Who isn’t? Google Trends is addictive.

Google Monitor

Want to track the popularity of certain keywords, or see how your site ranks compared to another? Download Google Monitor. With it, you can find the position of your website in Google Top for popular keywords and get more traffic from Google. Google Monitor will query Google and show you the position of your site by your target keywords and also how well your competitors are doing. It keeps statistics for several URLs and several lists of keywords.

Google Fight

Google Fight compares two search terms to show you which is more popular in the Googleverse. Plus, there’s stick-man kung-fu fighting as you wait for your results. Have “boy” fight “girl;” “Batman” fight “Robin.” And see what other terms people are fighting with: “OJ Simpson” vs. “Homer Simpson,” hotdog vs. hamburger.

Google Share

Google Share searches the popularity of search terms set within the context of a primary search term. Which political party is more popular in Kentucky? Google Share says Republican, because that term scored 1.8% of Kentucky hits while Democrats only managed 1.1%.

Land Geist

Land Geist combines Google Zeitgeist and Google Share along with a world map that gives you a global view of which countries rank highest (via Google Share) for any given search term. Interestingly, the creator of this application prefers AlltheWeb to Google as a search engine.

Google can do a lot more than find a word or two. Perhaps basic for experienced Googlers, the following search tips are worth mentioning anyway.

Quote search

Reduce your search results by either enclosing your search term in quotes or placing a dash between the keywords. Searching for “George Bush” or George-Bush will keep Google from returning irrelevant results like a link to the George Brothers Lawn Service website.

Date search

From the Advanced Search page, Google allows you to restrict your search by date. Unless you are searching Google Groups or Google News, the date search seems imperfect.

File type search

You can restrict your search to any file type you’d like by using the command “filetype” followed by a colon. So, if you are looking for primary documents from the International Olympic Committee, you might try this search: filetype:pdf IOC. Choose your search terms carefully when searching for PDFs, as Google doesn’t index the whole document. The spiders stop scanning at 120 KB, so make sure your search term will hit near the top.

Wildcard search

Use the asterisk (*) if you want to search around a variable. For instance, searching for “National * Agency” will give you results for the National Security Agency, the National Mapping Agency, the National Accrediting Agency, etc. But the wildcard doesn’t work within a word, you can’t search for ama*jad to find the name of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Happily, Google spellchecks for you.

Link search

Google lets you see what sites are linking to another site by prefacing your search with the command “link” followed by a colon. Who likes the Drudge Report? Searching for “link:www.drudgereport.com” will show you the 66,000 sites that link to it.

Site-restricted search

By using the command “site” followed by a colon, Google lets you search within a domain for the information you need. So, if a site doesn’t have a built-in search feature (usually powered by Google using the exact same search technology), you can apply a search to the site yourself. Find out what AT&T has to say about national security issues by searching for: site:att.com "national security.”

Google Weather

Just type “weather:city” into Google to get your local forecast.

Phone directory

Type in someone’s name, town and state, and Google will retrieve phone and address listings for that person. Plug in a phone number with an area code, and Google will work as a reverse-lookup engine, displaying to whom the number belongs.

Domain-restricted search

Like a site search, you can limited your search results by type of domain. Want to find what colleges are saying about steroid use on their own sites? Search for: site:.edu steroids. Some sites help you with this type of search. Google UncleSam will search only .gov sites for your query. FindLaw’s LawCrawler does the same for legal-related searches.

Cached links

When Google’s computers scour the internet searching and identifying pages, they save a copy of the pages and display them under the search result as a “cached” link. So you found the perfect page to answer your question, but the site is down? Click the cached link. Or say your Congressman had something embarrassing on his Web site, but took it down when it hit the blogs: he can’t take it out of Google’s cache! If Google’s cache missed it, try archive.org’s Way Back Machine—but for this to work, the site you’re looking for needs to be at least six months old.

Google launches its payments and certifications service, GBuy, June 28. The "PayPal killer" service, which has been quietly tested by online retailers since early 2005, will process orders on the Google domain, and then hand consumers back to the requesting site once the transaction is complete. During the transaction, Google will capture e-commerce data, which will help drive ever-more-precise targeting in future searches.

On the search results pages, Google will designate qualifying merchants with an icon indicating they are "Trusted GBuy Merchants." Analysts suggest this stamp of Google approval will encourage consumers to patronize those merchants deemed GBuy-worthy. Great for consumers and merchants alike? Maybe. Merchants may fear that Google capturing transaction data may lead to the company charging steeper prices for sponsored links, even if the merchants benefit from the GBuy seal by drawing greater numbers of customers.

During the beta phase of GBuy, Google will not charge merchants for the payment service; it's expected the company will charge 1.5% to 2% down the road, according to speculation in a Forbes.com article.

One wonders if eBay -- owner of rival PayPal -- will accept GBuy-administered transactions! PayPal prez Jeff Jordan commented to the WSJ.com: "It's a very legitimate competitive threat. It's hard not to pay attention to what Google is doing." PayPal, which is responsible for nearly a quarter of eBay's $1.3 billion quarterly revenue, commands a 24% market share of U.S. online payments, according to the same article.

Froogle is the ultimate shopping catalog, combining everything for sale on the internet in one place.

Type in a product and Froogle will display all the results with a photo of the product and a price. Then, sort by relevance or price. Find the lowest price on golf clubs on the net, or the most pricey diamond ring.

Still miss your old, trusty catalogs? Google Catalogs lets you search a mountain of U.S. mail-order product catalogs.

But Froogle isn’t just for frugal shoppers—it’s for sellers, too. Google is trying to take on sites like eBay that offer easy-to-use services for sellers of the products that inventory the site. If you are setting up an online business that trades in merchandise, Google has made it easy to push that information into Froogle, instead of waiting around for Google to pull it into its index.

Tips for setting yourself up as a Froogle seller:

Setting up a product feed

All you need to do is feed a spreadsheet or text file containing your product information to Google, and the engine will do the rest. You can update your product feed as often as you like, up to once a day. Froogle offers two separate product feeds, one for basic retailers, and an advanced option if you are dealing in high volume (e.g. thousands of video or book titles).

Seller guidelines

Like Google’s search engine, Froogle doesn’t play around with people it thinks are cheating the system. Screw up once, and you are out the door. Here are a few rules you must play by as a Google seller:

Direct U.S. online sales only are acceptable.
Affiliate sites are not acceptable.
Direct shipping to the customer is required.
Sales must be in U.S. dollars only.
The dollar sign ($) must appear once only per page.
Specify the product name and the price together.

Product feed optimization

Once you’re started with Froogle, your next goal is to increase your page rank on the search results of Froogle. You want your product on top to maximize the number of click-throughs you will get from buyers. For instance:

Include all relevant product information in your data feed, like the product’s brand name or ISBN. Keep in mind that the information in your data feed must match the information on your product web page. Your product feed is only for Google, not for the users and buyers.

Keep your descriptions as informative but brief as possible. Forty to sixty words is the ideal for generating a good keyword relevancy factor.

Write product names that use general terms: the brand name, model, manufacturer, and product type. Think about how potential buyers and Google users will search for your products when labeling them in your product feed file.

Image optimization

The most important part of your product information is the companion image file. A good, relevant image will increase your click-throughs and therefore your chances of selling the items. Here are some important tips:

First and foremost, you need to make your image folders spiderable. Google’s spiders are digging through billions of web pages all the time. Some have decided they don’t like this, and have put robots.txt files into their image folders to prevent spidering. Keeping Froogle from capturing your images only hurts your business and reduces your click-throughs.

Name your image files with short, relevant names that identify your product. Establish a naming convention so that all your products follow the same model, like gonewiththewind.gif or golfclubs.gif.

Froogle does not accept images 90x90 pixels or smaller. If you don’t have a bigger one, then don’t send it. Send Google your full-sized image from your website in your product feed and Froogle will resize it for you. Now that’s service!

Website optimization

While Froogle works with your product feed, like the rest of Google, Froogle is also constantly searching your Web site for information, even cross-referencing that information with your product feed, which is why your primary website and product feed need to be as identical as possible. Tweaking your site could improve your Froogle results and product ranking within Froogle. For instance:

Your web page should be laid out in HTML. Keeping your product information within Java or Flash will make it difficult for Google spiders to find it.

If you are using tables on your site, put your product image, title, description and price into one cell or as few cells as possible.

Include your “add to cart” button (or other purchase indicator) within the same table as your price and product image.

The “$” sign (dollar sign) should appear and may be of greater value if it is bold and set in a larger font size.

Keep the title and description listed on your product web page identical to the one listed in your Froogle data feed.

Add an uninterrupted 25–28 word sentence for your description that includes your keyword and is meaningful to readers.

Place the product description directly underneath the product title and, if possible, within the same cell as the title, price, and image.
